The Journal Of Curious Letters (The 13th Reality #1) by James Dashner - Blog Tour Review

For people who have followed Life Of A Nerdish Mum for a couple of years now, will know that I went through a huge Maze Runner phase and I read every thing I could find in the series (though I'm now slacking as I still haven't read the Fever Code!) So when I got the opportunity to review the first book in James Dashner's middle grade series, The 13th Reality - The Journal Of Curious Letters, I absolutely jumped at the chance. As well as my review today, I have an exciting tag for people to complete and share, so definitely make sure you check that out!

The Journal Of Curious Letters (13th Reality #1)

What if every time you made a choice that had a significant consequence, a new, alternate reality was created — the life that would’ve been had you made the other choice? What if those new realities were in danger? What if it fell to you to save all the realities?

Atticus Higginbottom, a.k.a. Tick, is an average thirteen-year-old boy until the day a strange letter arrives in his mailbox. Postmarked from Alaska and cryptically signed with the initials “M.G.,” the letter informs Tick that dangerous — perhaps even deadly — events have been set in motion that could result in the destruction of reality itself. M.G. promises to send Tick twelve riddles that will reveal on a certain day, at a certain time, at a certain place, something extraordinary will happen. Will Tick have the courage to follow the twelve clues M.G. sends to him? Will he be able to solve the riddles in time? Will Tick discover the life he was meant to live?

My Review

The Journal Of Curious Letters was so much fun! I really enjoyed the riddles and the fast paced adventure through the book.

Tick was a really great character and he felt very realistic to me. He wasn't the usual perfect protagonist and he had his own faults, so it all just made him more loveable and easy to get behind. It was also so very nice to see a happy family and a character having a good relationship with their dad. It's so incredibly rare to see this is any kind of book.

The riddles themselves were interesting and they weren't dumbed down for a younger audience, so me as a person (ever so slightly haha) over the target age enjoyed trying to work out the clues alongside Tick.

Overall this was a really good book, with plenty of action and it certainly kept me invested and on the edge of my seat. You can tell this is the first book in the series as it feels very much like a set up for future action, but this didn't detract from how much I enjoyed the story and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I gave this book 4 stars.

Thank you very much to Sweet Cherry Publishing and James Dashner for the opportunity to review The Journal Of Curious Letters.

The Tag!

And here are the prompts for the tag! I'll be tagging a couple of people on twitter, but if you want to do the tag yourself, then consider yourself tagged! My own answers to the tag will be up on a blog post very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the near future. The Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag!

Something a little different today on Life Of A Nerdish Mum, I'm doing the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag. I have seen this around everywhere and kept meaning to do it so here it is! I don't know who created the tag, so if you know please tell me so I can give them credit, but the most recent version I read was on The Book Review Cafe.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2017?

Ahhh I'm not sure any reader could ever choose only one book for this kind of question, so I'm cheating and putting two!

The first is Hereafter by the ever lovely LeeAnne Hansen (my review is here).

And the second is Walking Wounded by Anna Franklin Osborne (this review is here).

Best sequel of 2017 so far?

I could easily put Hereafter in this section too as it is a sequel. but I'd like to put something different for each section so I'm choosing Black Butler, Volume 19 by Yana Toboso.

New releases you haven’t read yet, but want to?

I have a ridiculous amount of new releases, that are no longer new releases because I've had them so long, but I just haven't had time to read them yet even though I want to! So I'll pick just one and that is Heartless by Marissa Meyer, it was published in November 2016, but as I wanted a paperback, my copy was published in February 2017.

Most anticipated release of the second half of 2017?

Another question I could put loads of books to but most definitely I think the top of the pile is Monster by Michael Grant, I can't wait to revisit the FAYZ!

Biggest disappointment of 2017?

This was a tough one, but I think it has to be Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. I read it many years ago but remembered nothing and reading it again I can see why. It was just not what I was expecting and didn't have the kind of impact I thought it would have.

Biggest Surprise?

100% The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. I don't know why, but I always thought that I wouldn't enjoy anything by Margaret Atwood, but I absolutely loved this. (My review will be up soon).

Favourite new author (debut or new to you)?

I have two, one is Anna Franklin Osborne (author of Walking Wounded, see the first question) and the other is Harriet Springbett the author of Tree Magic. I have been horribly remiss and my review isn't up yet, but I can honestly say it is a 5 star read!

Newest fictional crush?

Hmmmm I don't think I've had any major new crushes this year (yet). I think the closest is kind of a cheat as I watched the film first, but I have read the book now too. So I'm choosing Galen Erso from Rogue One.

Newest favourite character?

I'm currently reading Fairest by Marissa Meyer and I think Levana is my newest favourite character.

A book that made you cry?

There have only been two books that have made me cry this year and I've already mentioned both of them, the first was Walking Wounded by Anna Franklin Osborne and the second was Rogue One (yes, even though I knew what happened already I still cried).

Books that make you happy?

Any book I enjoy is a book that makes me happy!

Favourite movie adaptation of 2017?

I watch very few book - movie adaptations as they usually leave me enraged (I tried watching the Divergent movie and I had a three day rage headache, no joke). So I'll answer this slightly differently and give my answer for the best book to film adaptation I've seen rather than just this year, I have three, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (totally counting this as just one), Interview with The Vampire and The Devil Wears Prada. I love all of these adaptations.

Favourite review you’ve written this year
I had no idea on how to choose my favourite review, so I have followed Lorraine over at Book Review Cafe's lead and I've picked the one that has had the most traffic. That review is for The Promise by Casey Kelleher

Most beautiful book you’ve bought or received this year?

It was published back in 2015 but I only just got round to picking it up and the cover is stunning, The Vagrant by Peter Newman.

Books you need to read before the end of the year?

There isn't enough room on the internet to list all the books I want to read before the end of the year so I'll just pop up a couple that are begging me to read them soon.

Nominations!

I'm not going to nominate anyone as it is a little late to do this as we're just over the middle of the year, but if you want to do this then I tag YOU!

My A - Z of Books

I first saw this post over at Shelley Wilson and I thought this would be a lot of fun to do. (I have tried to find the original post but haven't yet, I will post a link when I find it). It's basically a get to know you through your a - z of books. Hopefully you think it's as fun as I did and if you fancy doing this too, please tag me or link me to your answers so I can check them out.

Author you've read the most books from

That will be either Terry Pratchett or Richard Laymon. I adore Terry Pratchett's work and Richard Laymon was my husband's favourite author when we first met so I read through all the books he owned.

Best sequel ever

I think this has to be Half Wild by Sally Green (I haven't read Half Lost yet as I know it will give me all the feels).

Currently reading

I'm currently reading a few books. Half Truths: A Half Bad Story by Sally Green, City Of Glass by Cassandra Clare, The Warren Commission Report: The Official Report On The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy by the President's Commission and I'm buddy reading the Iliad by Homer with two lovely ladies.

Drink of choice while reading

You can't beat a good cup of tea. It's pretty much the only thing I drink except water. Fun bonus fact -  I only drink coffee on train stations.

E - reader or physical book

100% Physical books. I did finally cave and get a Kindle towards the end of last year, but though it is useful, it will never feel quite the same as having a real book in my hands and being able to turn pages and use a bookmark.

Fictional Character you would probably have dated in high school

Jace Wayland, he's a complete jerk  but good looking and sadly I know on more than one occasion I chose the "bad boy" over the far better choice.

Glad you gave this book a chance

I am definitely glad that I gave Saga a chance, I was put off by the hype and I really didn't think it would be for me at all, but I absolutely love it.

Hidden Gem book

The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch. I read this book years ago and I still think about it now, I definitely think I'll need to re read it at some point very soon.

Important moment in your reading life

I can't really think of something too specific, but I guess discovering the online book world such as booktube, book blogging, Goodreads etc. I found people to share my love of books with.

Just finished

The last three books I finished were The Pillars Of The Earth by Ken Follett, Anything For Her by Jack Jordan and City Of Ashes by Cassandra Clare.

Kind of books you will not read

I'm really not a fan of contemporary (unless its a crime novel, that kind of contemporary is fine), when I read I use it to escape into another world and so I don't want to read about every day things,

Longest book you've read

So far it's War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy at 1444 pages.

Major book hangover

When I finished the Divergent series (Including Four) I didn't know what to do with myself for days as I'd binge read the books and I'd never done that before.

Number of bookcases you own

At the moment we have seven bookcases, but we are in urgent need of more as we have books piling up waiting to be shelved.

One book you've read multiple times

There's very few books that I have re read because I always want to read something new, but one of the ones I have re read is Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Preferred place to read

Either curled up on the sofa or tucked up in bed.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you've read

"There's nothing like the smell of old books. They smell like memories" - Yonder (A Southern Haunting #1) by LeeAnne Hansen

Reading regret

I really regret that I haven't got a record of all the books I have read in my life from being a child. Even if I'd started a book journal as a teenager or something like that; I would be better, but I only really thought about it when I discovered Goodreads. I have already set up Goodreads accounts for both Nerdlings so that they don't have that regret (If it's not something they want when they're old enough to choose that would be absolutely fine by me, but at least this gives them the option).

Series you started and need to finish!

The Throne of Glass Series, The Mortal Instruments, The Lunar Chronicles...it goes on, I need to work on that.

Three of your all-time favourite books

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub and The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis.

Unapologetic fangirl for

The Half Bad trilogy by Sally Green!

Very excited for this release more than all others

The follow up to the Six Of Crows, Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. I have no words for how excited I am!

Worst bookish habit

I cannot give up on a book, I really need to learn how to stop when I'm not enjoying a book as there are just so many books I want to read.

X marks the spot - Start on the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book

The Animals Of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann (I picked the bookshelf closest to me so I didn't have to get up).

Your latest purchase

My most recent purchase was an Amazon order and I got The 10th Anniversary Life and Death edition of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and 6 of the penguin little black books, The Communist Manifesto, Sinbad The Sailor, The Figure In The Carpet, The Old Man Of The Moon, The Terrors Of The Night and Goblin Market.

Zzzzz snatcher book - Last book that kept you up way too late

It was Anything For Her by Jack Jordan (watch out for a review coming soon as part of the blog tour), I just needed to know what happened.

So there you have all my answers, what do you think? Have you read any of the books I mentioned?

The Family Tree Mystery by Peter Bartram - Blog Tour Review

Today on Life of a Nerdish Mum I am excited to be sharing my review of Peter Bartram's latest Colin Crampton mystery. I also get to sh...
